Since the passing of the excitement of the Olivier Awards, we’ve been waiting patiently to learn about which shows our American friends have lined up for the 2022 Tony Awards. Broadway is the home of America’s finest productions, and we always cross our fingers and hope that the darling shows of the West End do well across the pond. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at everything you need to know about the 2022 Tony Awards.

What are the Tony awards?

The Tony Awards – The Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre – recognise excellence in theatre in the United States. The ceremony is held annually in Manhattan and is a glitzy evening celebrating all that is wonderful about the stage. As is the case with all awards events, there are several categories in the Tony Awards, including Best Play, Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Revival of a Musical, Best Revival of a Play, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre, Best Direction of a Play, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a play/musical, Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a play/musical, and many others.

Any British shows to watch out for this year?

While we wish all the shows the best of luck at this year’s Tony’s, we have to keep a special eye on the British performances that we think will do well. Perhaps the standout is the smash-hit Six The Musical, which has become a global sensation since its humble beginnings in Edinburgh in 2017. It has toured the UK, US, Australia, and New Zealand in recent years and has even played on a Norwegian cruise ship, much to the delight of the passengers and holidaymakers on board.

If you’ve already seen Six, it probably won’t surprise you that it has been tipped to go well at the Tonys. After all, it’s a wonderful production of a story that so many of us know well. At its core is the topic of a year three history lesson, but the way the show has been brought to life has cemented its place as a unique and much-loved representation of the lives of Henry VIII’s wives like we’ve never seen them before.

Lucy Moss and Toby Marlow must take the credit for making this British horror story much more accessible to broader audiences. Tudor England was not a great place for women, and the women that suffered at the hands of Henry VIII have been given a whole new voice on stage. We’re confident that it will do well at the Tonys, and we hope the American audience loves it as much as we do!

Other shows to watch out for

In addition to the incredibly popular show about Henry VIII’s wives, other British nominees include The Lehman Trilogy, Girl From the North Country, Company and Hangmen. As is always the case with the Tonys, we’re in for a special evening celebrating all that’s wonderful about Broadway and American theatre in general. We hope Six and the other British shows nominated do the West End proud and return home with an award. After all, they certainly deserve it for their incredible productions.
